Highlands is situated in Pahang, the largest of Malaysia's eleven states. Pahang
is mostly undeveloped and covered by ancient tropical rainforest. Cameron Highlands is the smallest district in Pahang, but its most popular holiday area. Situated 1500 meters high and surrounded by dense rainforest, the Cameron Highlands are a cool retreat easily accessible by road, just two hours drive north of Kuala Lumpur. The first time visitor will probably be surprised by the unique scenic beauty of the the area, which is mostly devoted to various forms of agriculture and horticulture. There are wonderfully manicured tea plantations, vegetable farms with terraced growing areas cut from steep hill slopes, flower nurseries, strawberry farms, butterfly farms and the highest road on Peninsular Malaysia which leads to the summit of Gunung Brinchang, the highest peak in Cameron Highlands. The area's two main towns are Tanah Rata and Brinchang, accommodation here ranges from first class hotels and self-catering apartments to some of the best value budget rooms in Malaysia. There are numerous restaurants and eating stalls in both towns with Indian, Chinese, Malay and Western food available everywhere. For those who enjoy getting out and about, nearly all the hotels and guest houses will arrange half-day and full day tours of the area. For the more adventurous visitor, there are a number of walks along many jungle trails leading deep into the surrounding rainforest. The special atmosphere of Cameron Highlands is created by its cool climate, unique scenery and its friendly and hospitable people. It is an indispensable area to visit for anyone who wants to discover the diversity of life in Malaysia. |
